- FROM THE FOLDS OF THE ANNALS: MAK YONG TRADITIONAL THEATRE Introduction to Mak Yong Mak Yong is a form of traditional performing art combining theatre, dance and music. In the past, Mak Yong was performed during the culmination of the rice harvesting season. This artform, categorised as a Malay dance-drama, combines elements of rituals or incantations; acting and stylised dancing; vocal and instrumental music; narrations and scripted dialogues that are expressed formally yet in a nonchalant manner. It is mostly performed in Patani, Kelantan and Terengganu.
Certain scholars believe that Mak Yong was regularly performed at the Patani palace during the 17th century as testified by the only source that describes life during that period: Hikayat Patani (Patani Annals). However, it should not be denied that Mak Yong might have already been performed in the villages throughout Kelantan and Patani during that period or even earlier than 17th century.
